Bison Spotlight – Erin Kelley

Erin Kelley, second from the right.

Today we would like to shine our Bison Spotlight on Erin Kelley, a member of the class of 2020 who plans to graduate with a major in Accounting and receive a certificate in Business Analytics. On The Hill Erin is part of the Honors Program, captain of the women’s field hockey team and in the Accounting Club. In her spare time, Erin enjoys working out/running and reading books about topics ranging from nutrition to self-development.

This past summer, Erin interned at Amica Mutual Insurance Company as a Rotational Accounting Intern. She completed a 10-week internship, where she spent half of her time in the Accounts Payable department and the other half in the Financial Reporting & Analysis department. A normal day for Erin consisted of sorting through expense reports for the company and compiling the data into an Excel worksheet for management. In the afternoon, she assisted with the duties of performing the daily pay cycle. After 5 weeks of her internship, she switched over to the Financial Reporting & Analysis department. Here she was responsible for assisting in the preparation of financial statements, management reports, and project costing analyses.

Erin said her favorite thing she did during her internship was, “prepare and present a project about how Amica can better attract and retain millennial employees within the accounting field with my partner Tom, who attends Providence College, to the upper-level management in the accounting department.”

When we asked Erin what her key takeaway from her internship was, she said:

“My key takeaway from my internship was the fact that being an adult and going to work 8+ hours a day, 5 days a week is not easy. It makes me extremely thankful for the time I have left here at Nichols and to enjoy my senior year a little more. Before I know it, I will have a lot of responsibilities, but it is just another challenge that I am looking forward to taking on in the next stage of my life.”

Prior to completing this internship Erin never used to be a huge coffee drinker. She would have one cup, here or there for enjoyment. Being in an office environment with adults made her outlook on coffee change. Erin said, “Being in an office environment with adults makes you want to drink coffee, especially when they are all doing it. So I can truthfully admit, that I am now a coffee addict as well.”

When Erin was asked if there was anything else she would like to share, she said “Amica is a great company that really focuses on both the satisfaction of their customers and employees. Everyone at the corporate headquarters in Lincoln, RI, where I worked, had nothing but good things to say about the company.”

Thank you, Erin, for taking the time to share your experience with us. We wish you the best of luck with your future career!
