As we welcome students back to the Hill for another exciting year, now is the perfect time to reset, refocus, and take advantage of all the opportunities that college life has to offer. Whether you’re stepping onto campus for the first time or returning for another year, the choices you make outside the classroom can have a significant impact on your future career success.
The start of a new academic year is more than just buying textbooks and finding your classrooms. It is a chance to set goals, build connections, gain experience, and begin developing the skills employers seek. The most successful students are often those who get involved early and take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
Here are a few ways to make the most of the year ahead:
Get Involved on Campus
Join clubs, organizations, leadership programs, and campus activities. Involvement helps you develop transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership while building experiences you can showcase on your resume.
Build Your Network
Introduce yourself to professors, connect with classmates, attend campus events, and engage with alumni. The relationships you build during college can open doors to internships, mentorships, and future career opportunities.

Career development starts long before senior year. Whether you want to explore majors and careers, review your resume, find internships, prep for interviews, or build your LinkedIn profile, the Career and Professional Development Center is here to help every step of the way.
Stay Organized
Use a planner, calendar, or app to keep track of assignments, meetings, and deadlines. Developing strong organizational skills now will help you balance academics, activities, internships, and personal commitments.
Say “Yes” to New Opportunities
Attend events, meet new people, and step outside your comfort zone. Many of the experiences that shape your future begin with a simple decision to get involved.
