
Hosting a Nichols College Intern
Nichols College students participate in internships each year to enhance their skills and determine what direction to take their future careers. Internships offer students the opportunity to gain professional experience, earn academic credit and prepare for life after graduation.
Student are prepared for their internship experiences in their major classes and as part of the Professional Development Program that helps students be ready for their professional lives.
As the Employer, you are a partner in the education of the student and their goals. These goals are:
- Bridging what is learned in the classroom and to the field in which they work.
- Creating opportunities for students to develop professional skills.

The Role of the Internship Site Supervisor
Student interns should be supervised by a staff person employed by the site organization. The site supervisor should have experience and expertise in the area in which the student is interning.
The site supervisor should:
- Provide the intern a clearly defined job description and list of responsibilities that complement the student’s academic program.
- See a sample job description HERE.
- Set a work schedule with the intern that accommodates the number of hours needed to be fulfilled for credit being earned. The intern is responsible for tracking their hours, but the internship site supervisor should review hours each week.
- Students need to work at least 120* hours to earn three credits.
- Duties should be hands-on, career-related responsibilities that enable to student to have clear takeaways from the experience.
- Provide the student intern frequent feedback.
- Complete a performance evaluation provided by the internship faculty advisor from Nichols College. The typical timeframe for the evaluations is mid-semester and two weeks prior to the end of the internship.
