Internship FAQ
- Anyone!
- Students should have 60 completed credits to request an academic internship for credit.
- Freshman and Sophomore: Non-credit experiential internship (paid or unpaid)
- Juniors and Seniors: For credit (paid or unpaid).
- Academic Internship (for credit)
- Experiential Internship (not for credit)
Academic Internship, for credit, involves:
- Site supervisor
- Faculty internship advisor
- Student intern
When a student accepts an internship position, they must report the internship through Handshake for approval from their site supervisor, our career office, faculty advisor, and registrar. The student is expected to complete site responsibilities and academic work that is determined by the faculty advisor. Students should be keeping track of their clocked hours. At the end of the internship they will receive a grade and appropriate credit hours.
Experiential Internships
- Students may take advantage of as many internships as possible during their time at Nichols
- Experiential internships are not for credit, but they are a great way for students to gain experience and find an industry that fits their goals.
- A student is not required to report this internship or complete academic assignments regarding it.
For an internship to count for academic credit (3 course credits) a student must complete a minimum of 120 hours over a 10-12 week period. (15 weeks if it is during the semester).
Sport Management students need to complete at least 150 hours to earn three credits.
An internship can be a paid or unpaid opportunity. Many of the internships that Nichols’ students complete are funded by an hourly wage or stipend. Students can still earn credit for internships whether it is paid or unpaid.
The best place to do this is Handshake. If your company already has an account on Handshake, please be sure to connect with Nichols College on the site. Once approved, you will be able to post jobs and internships, along with having access to register for events like our career fair.
If you don’t already have a Handshake account, this guide will be a great resource to help you get started!
Academic Internships: Students will report the internship on Handshake. They will need to provide an internship description (per site supervisor); academic requirements (per the faculty sponsor); supervisor name and contact information; and other basic information (e.g. timeline, company name, address, contact information, etc.) Once this is completed the online approval process will begin.
Note: As the site supervisor you will be the first to approve the internship. You will receive an email from the CPDC (Career and Professional Development Center) with the subject line: Experiential Academic Internship. The email will provide a link for you to click on to approve/disapprove. Please be sure to do this within the timeline stated as the link is only active for that time period. You will want to print out a copy of this page for your records prior to closing out.
