*There is the opportunity for intern(s) to start during the fall semester based on each intern’s availability and their willingness to be a part of fall tournaments.
OPPORTUNITY FOR INTERNSHIP (150 hours over 20-22 weeks).
WHO: Open to three (3) Nichols College undergraduate Softball players. Sport management majors must complete 150 hours; other majors complete 120 hours.
WHAT: Manage the Charlton Wildfire, a 14U USA Softball tournament team.
The Charlton Wildfire consists of twelve (12) players between 13-14 years old from Charlton, Dudley, Sturbridge, Brimfield, and Brookfield. Most of the players have played together since 10U and have currently practiced locally together since August 2020. This internship is supervised directly by Tom Stewart, Associate Dean GPS, and Coach Keith Sheehan.
WHEN: November 1, 2021 through April 10, 2022. Our schedule is flexible based on interns’ college softball schedule. In-person requirements mainly consist of one evening per week or on weekends/2hrs each session from Nov-April. Schedule is flexible.
TASK #1: Manage a local 14U tournament softball team to prepare them for competitive national level USA Softball sanctioned tournaments that range from October 2021 through summer 2022.
TASK #2: Develop a strategic plan for the team through the 2022 season to include a marketing plan to attract future high-end players to try out for this team.
TASK #3: Plan, write, and execute the training program and skills development plan while building team motivation, espirit de corps, and unity among all twelve (12) players.
TASK #4: Provide leadership and mentorship. End state is to influence the players to take personal responsibility for their own development and grow into high school athletes with the competitive spirit.
TASK #5: Develop and manage relationships with players’ families so they understand and support the development plan. Encourage camaraderie among the families.
TASK #6: Conduct effective presentations to a group audience, while providing individual attention to players that develop differently. Effectively communicate purpose and direction.
NICHOLS STRATEGIC PLAN: This internship fits Nichols College into the local community and is nested within the 2020-2025 Nichols College Strategic Plan in multiple areas.

Location: Winter indoor practices will be in the Worcester area. Our home field is behind the Charlton MA Public Library, 40 Main St, Charlton, MA
