Support Your Career Development

As a student-athlete, you are developing and applying transferable skills on and off the field that are in high demand by employers. We are here to help you know how to market your collegiate athletic experience to demonstrate the skills you have gained to help in your search for graduate schools, internships, and full-time employment.

Being a student-athlete is more than participating in practices and competitions, it’s an experience that helps you develop valuable skills that employers seek. Athletics demonstrate your ability to manage competing priorities, work effectively with others, overcome challenges, and stay committed to your long-term goals.

When adding athletics to your resume, treat the experience just like a job, internship, leadership role, or campus involvement activity. Think about your responsibilities, accomplishments, and contributions to the team. What did you do? How did you contribute to team success? What skills did you develop that relate to your career goals?

You can include athletics in sections such as Athletic Experience , Leadership Experience, Campus Involvement, Activities, or Relevant Experience. Use concise bullet points that highlight your responsibilities, contributions, and achievements. Focus on action verbs and, when possible, include measurable results.

Why Employers Value Student-Athletes

Your experience as a student-athlete helps you build skills that transfer directly to the workplace, including:

  • Time management and prioritization
  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Leadership and accountability
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Resilience and adaptability
  • Goal setting and achievement
  • Problem-solving and decision-making
  • A strong work ethic, commitment to excellence and a competitive spirit

Balancing classes, practices, training sessions, competitions, travel, and your other commitments requires discipline and dedication. When you can clearly communicate these experiences in professional terms, you will help employers understand the value you would bring to their organization.

Remember: employers aren’t just interested in the sport you play; they want to know about the skills, experiences, and accomplishments you gained along the way. By connecting your athletic experiences to the qualifications of the positions you’re pursuing, you can stand out as a strong and well-rounded candidate.
